Unit 41- Part A

You tin can say 'I wish you luck / every success / a happy altogether' etc. :

• I wish you every success in the future.
•    I saw Tim earlier the examination and he wished me luck.

We say 'wish somebody something' ( luck / a happy altogether etc.). But y'all cannot 'wish that something happens'. We utilise hope in this state of affairs. For case:
•     I hope you get this letter before you become away.  (not I wish you get)

Compare I wish and I hope:
• I wish y'all a pleasant stay here.
• I promise you have a pleasant stay hither. (non I wish you take)

We also use wish to say that we regret something, that something is non every bit we would like it. When we use wish in this style, we use the past (knew / lived etc.), but the meaning is present:

•    I wish I knew what to do about the problem. (I don't know and I regret this)
•    I wish yous didn't take to become so before long. (you have to go)

I wish I could take (done something) = I regret that I could not exercise it:
•    I hear the party was great. I wish I could have gone.   (but I couldn't become)

You lot can say 'I wish (somebody) would (do something)'. For example:
It's been raining all 24-hour interval. Jill doesn't like information technology.
She says: I wish it would stop raining.

Jill would similar the rain to cease, merely this volition probably not happen.

We use I wish … would when we would like something to happen or change.
Usually, the speaker doesn't look this to happen.

We often employ I wish … would to complain well-nigh a situation:
•    The phone has been ringing for 5 minutes. I wish somebody would respond it.
